Experience points are the only way to level up. You gain them by harvesting crops, working on your neighbors farms, and buying things from the Farmville Market. You only earn money from trees and animals.
I started a new Farmville account to test what I have read. I made sure my farm had a large an area as possible for crop harvesting. I then bought some Farmville cash and planted raspberries. I clicked on the biplane and spent $2 Farm cash to grow them completely. It does not matter whether you use the combine or harvest, plow, and seed, you get the same amount of experience points. You can do this repeatedly. If you have to "unlock" a crop like Columbine, for example, and try to use the Mastery Bonus to get double mastery points, it does NOT give you double the points. Use the Fertilize All to gain more XP when harvesting. Repeating this process leveled me up the quickest even though raspberries give the least experience of all of the crops.
Another thing I did is purchase an "Unwither Ring". This cost me $50.00 in real cash but I did this an part of my experiment. I find that when busy with work and school, I don't plant on my other Farmville account but can plant anything on my account with the Unwither Ring and harvest it when I have time to. I was 16 levels behind my first account and now have surpassed the other account by 6 levels. Ari was at level 32 when I first started, Kim was at 48. Now Ari is at level 58 and Kim at 53. Ari leveled up 26 levels and Kim only leveled up 5 levels for a difference of 21 levels!!!
I created a database for a school project. I ranked the crops by experience. I had to take two screen shots to get everything: (Click to enlarge)
